At the end of the course the students should be able to:

CO 306.1 Understand the mechanical properties of material, factor of safety, theories of failures, Notch sensitivity, endurance diagrams, design stress for variable and repeated load sand calculate Stress concentration factor in tension, bending and torsion
CO 306.2 Design and analyse of socket-spigot cotter joint, sleeve and cotter joint, Knuckle joint. application of key, coupling and design calculation of key, spline, flange coupling, flexible coupling, compression coupling, muff coupling.
CO 306.3 Design and analyse transmission shaft on the basis of static load, strength, rigidity, stiffness, continuous loading for fatigue condition. properties of frictional material and calculate the torque transmission capacity of the single plate, multi-plate and centrifugal clutch.
CO 306.4 Understand the geometry of thread forms, terminology of screw threads, thread standards and design of bolted joints due to eccentric loading, Statically loaded tension joints, Force analysis-square and trapezoidal threads with and without Collar friction and calculate the efficiency of thread.
CO 306.5 Understand the riveted and welded joints, strength of rivet and welded joints, welded joints due to the eccentric loading, welded joint subjected to bending moment, design and efficiency calculation of riveted joint for Boiler.

CO 308.1 Understanding Conduction, Convection & Radiation, Combined modes of heat transfer, Derivation of general differential equation of heat conduction in Cartesian co-ordinate, linear heat flow through a plane and composite wall and solve steady state conduction problems with heat generation. Understanding concepts of heat conduction without heat generation in cylinder and sphere, critical thickness of insulation and solve steady state conduction problems without heat generation.
CO 308.2 Acquire knowledge about types of fins, Fin equation for rectangular profile, obtaining solution for infinite length, negligible heat loss from fin tip, finite long and heat transfer from fin tip, and calculate effectiveness and efficiency of fins. Understanding Lumped system analysis and solve transient heat conduction problems in large plane wall, long cylinders and sphere through Heisler`s chart.
CO 308.3 Understanding the of forced convection & Natural convection, Dimensional analysis of forced and natural convection, Flow across cylinders and spheres, Flow in tubes, Reynold’s analogy and convective heat transfer correlations related to Forced and Natural convection.
CO 308.4 Understand two-phase heat transfer, Pool boiling, boiling regimes and boiling curve , Condensation heat transfer, Heat transfer correlation for inclined plates, vertical tubes, Horizontal bank tubes and Mass transfer in laminar and turbulent convection, Molecular diffusionand also calculate mass-diffusion.
CO 308.5 Ability to perform energy analysis in Parallel & Counter flow heat exchanger and obtain LMTD and NTU relations to measure heat exchanger’s performance and Concept of black body & grey body, Radiant heat exchange between two parallel grey surface and concentric cylinders and obtain relations for radiative heat transfer between surfaces and understand the Concept of irradiation and radiosity.
